SPACE DIMENSION CONTROLLER

Is the real sound of Detroit showing signs of a rebirth from both inside and outside of the cities borders? I certainly hope so, especially if it puts an end to a lot of the music that has been passed off as techno in the past couple of years.

I mentioned Space Dimension Controller (or Jack Hamill to his mates) briefly last week and one of his tracks also features on the Digi DJ's Podcast.

I would love to hear a collaboration between SDC and Motor City Drum Ensemble. I'm sure they'd come up with some great tracks together.

Here's two brilliant remixes to check out.

I'm playing a full on techno set at the Hoofer Doofer Festival next month with Captain Johnson. We'll be recording both sets so look out for them on here in the not too distant future.

Disco Noir Recommends... ANDREW CLARKE

Burnley's Andrew Clarke drops an hour long mix that starts off in laid back fashion before progressing into peak time disco territory. Featuring tracks and remixes from Prins Thomas, Beatfantatic, Archie Bronson Outfit and (I'm sure I've heard this name before) Escape From New York.

You can catch a double dose of AC in Brighton on:

Native Instruments MASCHINE

I've gone for a pretty big upgrade in the studio (in fact I'm just waiting for it to be delivered)! I hate the pads on my Korg Microkontrol and I've been looking at means of introducing a more 'live' element into my Ableton Live DJ sets.

I did consider some of the range from the AKAI MPD collection. However the more I looked and read up on Native Instruments Maschine the more it made sense.

Just one immediate possibility of its application - like sampling the last track of the previous DJ's mix and then incorporating that into the beginning of my mix is a mouth watering prospect.

Another scenario is if I'm playing a CD based set (I'm finally learning to use CDJs, I jumped straight from over 10 years of vinyl to Ableton Live) having Maschine as a standalone live accompaniment is really useful.

Obviously I realise both of these instances can be created with other hardware samplers but its the clever mix of hardware and software that I'm really looking forward to getting to grips with. Never mind the million and one other things it can do (like MPC emulation, DAW control, step sequencer...)

Anyway... I don't need to rabbit on about how good it sounds. I'll leave it to Carl Craig and Kelvin Scholar to explain:

GARETH CHESHIRE - DISCO NOIR CHART (JULY 2010)

I had the chance to play an early set at Peacock this past Friday which I recorded for a forthcoming Digi - Electronic DJ's Podcast (link shortly). A number of the tracks on the mix are featured in my July chart.

01. SPACE DIMENSION CONTROLLER - JOURNEY TO THE CORE OF THE UNKNOWN SPHERE [ROYAL OAK]
02. TORNADO WALLACE - PADDLIN' [DELUSIONS OF GRANDEUR]
03. MARK E - YOU [MERC]
04. KING DJ - ATTACK OF THE KILLER MONKS [BEAR FUNK]
05. LOOSE FIT - CHUG (GREG WILSON REMIX) [JOIN THE DOTS]
06. JOHNWAYNES - GET UP (JUST JOHN MIX) [ENDLESS FLIGHT]
07. HATCHBACK - JETLAG (FAZE ACTION REMIX) [THISISNOTANEXIT]
08. LAURENT GARNIER - GNANMANKOUDJI (EMPEROR MACHINE REMIX) [PIAS]
09. AJELLO - 2000 LIGHTYEARS FROM HOME [MAD ON THE MOON]
10. SAN SODA - ODE AAN DE VERKEERDREMPEL [WE PLAY HOUSE]

Keep an eye on Space Dimension Controller AKA Jack Hamill. The 20 year old from Belfast recently played a live set at Sonar Festival in Barcelona.

The rather long titled 'Journey To The Core of The Unknown Sphere' sounds like it was produced in Detroit in the mid 80s before jumping into a DMC-12 and smashing into modern day slo-mo disco / house. Great Scott!

ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK - SAVE OUR LOVE (GARETH CHESHIRE EDIT)

I haven't done a complete re-edit that I've let loose on SoundCloud for a while. I felt I needed to come back with something good, I really love this track and extra care was taken with it so as to not destroy the feeling of the original.

When people create edits (I feel) a lot of the time they seem to lose track of why they're editing the track in the first place. Instead churning badly warped loops that take away, rather than enhance the original work.

ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK - SAVE OUR LOVE (GARETH CHESHIRE EDIT) by Gareth Cheshire

It's been picking up some great support and feedback, thanks everyone!

MOTOR CITY DRUM ENSEMBLE... AT LAST!

Danilo Plessow (AKA) Motor City Drum Ensemble touches down in Liverpool tomorrow night at Coco De Mer. To say I'm excited is really an understatement.

Since I first listened to MCDE's release on Compost Black at the tail end of 2007 I have bought and played more or less everything he has produced since.

In essence his music is a distillation of everything that is good about house, techno and jazz music. A mix between the old and the new that so few manage to get right.

I'm crossing my fingers, hoping he'll play his new remix of Zero 7 - Home at some point tomorrow.

You can check out the DJ mixes that got so many of my friends interested in him below:

Also here's an interview with Danilo from the excellent Wunderkind blog for you to check out.

A collection of his Raw Cuts EP series was released last month.

See you tomorrow. It's going to be special.

SAALIM - SNOWFALL TRIBE YIN (FEELIN' ALRIGHT)

Arriving at the end of May is the debut EP from Northern Ireland's Bored Audio. I played the Acos CoolKAs remix recently at Pigeon Hole Disco and it sounded all nice and lovely! Also featured is an excellent remix from Toby Tobias that morphs the laid back original into a heavy hitting monster.

MR PAUL & GED LEVER MIXES

SIMON KEAT - THE ACID DISCO MIX

One of the driving reasons behind me creating this new blog is so I can help raise awareness to the high quality of DJs Liverpool possesses.

Simon Keat posted this mix on the CIRCUS Messageboard a few days ago and I thought it would be a perfect way to kick off the first of what I hope will be many guest mixes to follow.

Its a beautifully mixed selection in honour of his heroes: Ron Hardy and Theo Parrish.

Further details about the mix and the tracklisting can be found on Simon's SoundCloud Profile.

ESSENTIAL MIX 500 WITH AEROPLANE

Where do I start with this post?

It's taken me a week to get over the occasion and I'll be downright honest - I barely remember anything of it.

The night got off to a quiet start at my friend Sean's house. We had a mix for a few hours (on turntables no less) and downed a bottle of vodka between us in swift succession. It was during this mass vodka intake that I received a text message from another friend David telling me Daft Punk we're the special guests at CIRCUS.

Being quite drunk at this stage both Sean and I we're in shock. I contacted a DJ (who I won't name because I'm still thinking of ways of how to get him back). To find out what was going on and what followed was the biggest leg pulling incident of my entire life! I'll blame the vodka and not my idiocy... moving swiftly on...

Listening back now for the first time, Aeroplane made for excellent guests. I just wish I could relive it, without being in such a state!

GARETH CHESHIRE - WE LOVE... FRESH BLOOD by Gareth Cheshire

WELCOME!

Welcome and thanks for visiting my new blog! In the coming weeks I will be adding content and changing the design (this is only temporary).

This time around the aim is to provide a more personalised blog than with my previous mix only offering 'The Downstairs Mixup'.

You'll be able to find out about mixes, productions, tracks I like, party information and lots of other stuff you would expect from a blog of this sort.

Also I get quite a few people asking me to help them out with various Ableton Live issues and because I'm usually rubbish at explaining myself in person I'll aim to cover certain subjects via this blog. I don't know much but it might be handy for someone... somewhere!

Have a great weekend.

Gareth
